I've put together another series of screenshots demonstrating my project's high compatibility across existing Web browsers. The button with a number in it near the top is a JS-update clock, which happened to be pre-generated to a number ending with 0000. If the clock's number doesn't end in four zeros, that means basic JS support is working, and the clock is updating. https://ift.tt/2Uf55Z0 I'll be happy to answer any questions about this project. Launch HN: Deviceplane (YC W20) – Update and Manage Devices Running Linux

Launch HN: Deviceplane (YC W20) – Update and Manage Devices Running Linux
18 by joshwget | 0 comments on Hacker News.
Hey Hacker News! We're Josh, Sean, and Cyrus from Deviceplane ( https://ift.tt/2RRBjH2 ). Deviceplane is an open source device management tool for embedded systems, IoT, and edge computing. More specifically, we manage any device running Linux. These can be found in many different categories of hardware such as single-board computers (Raspberry Pis, Jetson Nanos), IoT devices/gateways, and servers running at the edge. The use cases for Linux devices span many different verticals/industries: robotics, consumer appliances, drones, autonomous vehicles, medical devices, and much more. Your first thought might be that a tool for managing robots and a tool for managing medical devices are quite different, but after talking to a variety of companies, we've found that the pain points across these industries are actually quite similar! Deviceplane solves the biggest infrastructure problems for these use cases: - Orchestrating and deployment of remote updates - Network connectivity and SSH access - Host and application monitoring - Device organization: naming, labeling, searching, and filtering of devices - Access and security controls Deviceplane is designed to support a variety of hardware, from small embedded devices to large x86 servers. Today’s tooling ecosystem suffers from being segmented by hardware size. For smaller devices, the Yocto project is popular. While it's good for building custom Linux installations, it has downsides for delivering applications. It's hard to understand, can take hours to compile, and solves only a portion of the problems present in device management. For larger devices, many companies seem to build and maintain their own internal tooling. We've seen everything from systems built around configuration management to scripts polling for new Debian packages in S3. These systems are usually brittle, fall short of a complete feature set, and drain precious engineering resources with their maintenance. We think Deviceplane is a great replacement for all of these. Not only is it suitable for all of these hardware sizes, it also presents a way to standardize the tooling across them. One of our goals with Deviceplane is to make device management more accessible to developers. To do this, we build on technologies and concepts popularized in cloud deployments: - Applications are packaged as containers and defined in a format resembling Docker Compose - Updates can be rolled out and tested gradually by using "canary" deployments - An intuitive and scriptable CLI that will feel familiar to Docker and Kubernetes users Deviceplane integrates with your device by running a lightweight static binary via your system supervisor. We can be used with nearly any Linux distro, which means you can continue using Ubuntu, Raspbian, a Yocto build, or whatever else fits your needs. Deviceplane is completely open source. The code for everything from the agent to the backend and UI can be found on GitHub ( https://ift.tt/2uxqK40 ). We put a lot of effort into making our open source version as easy as possible to run. You can even run the backend of Deviceplane with a single Docker command: docker run -d --restart=unless-stopped -p 8080:8080 deviceplane/deviceplane For more information on hosting Deviceplane yourself, check out our docs ( https://ift.tt/2GxnNmM ). If you'd rather jump right into managing devices, we have a hosted version available at https://ift.tt/37BqVtt . Lastly, we'd love to hear more about your experiences managing devices! What have your biggest pain points been, and what infrastructure do you wish existed to solve those? Either comment here, or shoot us an email anytime at founders@deviceplane.com.

Hi, we (two man company) have just release what we think is the world's biggest mobile crossword (single grid of 103x103) for iOS and Android. It plays pretty well all the way down to iPhone 5 (a wee bit small to be honest!). Looking for any feedback especially around any novel (read cheap) ideas on the marketing/promotion front. The retention on the app is awesome once people get started, but as it is a single grid the life time value is pretty limited. I think part of the appeal is the fact you can finish it so it is a mixed pleasing. Cheers, James ps - we are UK based, but we have made quite a lot of effort to avoid / callout where it is a UK term/spelling. https://ift.tt/2uqBXmD

Mapipedia is a web platform I've created to make it easy for people to share goespatial time series data and display it on animated maps. There's also a social media component that allows you to write comments, follow, share and like data sets. You can also download the CSV data and embed animations into your own websites. I initially posted about Mapipedia in March 2019. I've taken a lot of the feedback on board and done a major overhaul of the site as well adding a lot of new features. I'd appreciate some feedback on overall look and feel (on mobile and desktop - there were problems on mobile previously). However it is best viewed in Chrome on desktops becuase it looks better on larger screens. I've also had some people say the website is blocked but have not been able to figure out why. If you have any thoughts on that it would be appreciated. The site also crashed last time I posted here so I'm wanting to test changes for robustness as well. Show HN: Google Sheets add-on to compare text, fuzzy-match, highlight duplicates
4 by chiscript | 0 comments on Hacker News.
I created an add-on for Google Sheets called Flookup, and it comes both as a free version and a VERY AFFORDABLE paid version. At its core, Flookup is a fuzzy matching add-on that helps you manage text that is less than a 100% match. Beyond that it can be used to: 1. Search for and match data regardless of whether it contains typos. 2. Highlight and delete duplicates duplicates even if the data has mismatched text. 3. Calculate the percentage similarity between strings. 4. Extract unique values from any column based on percentage similarity. 5. Sum and find the average of numbers based on corresponding partial matches. Because of its versatility, Flookup can be used to return the best match, the next best match, etc. until the minimum percentage similarity is reached. This feature avoids weaknesses other fuzzy matching algorithms have because it safely hands power to the user, and I believe the user is the best judge of which data is a match or not. Another great feature Flookup has is that it can be used to combine lookup values. This is particularly helpful when your data has many similar strings and you want to add extra information to your lookup value in order to increase the specificity of your query. Finally, Flookup is good for more than just fuzzy matching; it is the improved replacement for VLOOKUP and INDEX/MATCH that you have been looking for. Show HN: Remake – A server-rendered framework for building CRUD web apps fast

I wanted to have a framework that would let me build web apps faster than ever before. I didn’t care if it was a little hacky or didn’t use best practices — I wanted to be able to get a multi-user application out the door in hours instead of months. I researched the CMS space for months before deciding to build something from scratch. My goal was to be 90% done building a web app once I had the static HTML and CSS finished. I’m not a big fan of building out API endpoints over and over again for every new app, fiddling with a database, or doing lots of config. What I ended up with was a syntax that lets developers tag HTML elements as containing data (i.e. objects or arrays), thereby transforming the tree structure of the DOM into a JSON tree that can be saved to the current user's account. It took a while after that to evolve the syntax and make it easy to use. I call the project Remake[0] and I’ve been working on it non-stop for the past year. After a failed Product Hunt launch[1], I kept going and managed to get my first few dozen users. I live stream my progress on Twitch[2] (Thursdays and Fridays, 12pm EST) and I’m consistently able to build full CRUD web apps within hours — projects that would’ve easily taken me weeks or months before. A bonus that HN might appreciate: Remake is a server-rendered framework, so the front-end library isn't even necessary or loaded for 90% of users. Only logged in users who can edit the current page need to have JS enabled.
