Harry Maguire arrest: Manchester United and England footballer appears in court in Greece over alleged Mykonos brawl

Harry Maguire deftly avoided the scrum of journalists waiting outside the courtroom in Greece on Saturday, where he appeared following his detention over an alleged brawl on the island of Mykonos this week.

The England and Manchester United footballer was arrested alongside two other Britons following a suspected fight on Thursday night.

According to the police, an altercation had taken place, as had an “exchange of words” with officers.

Police altercation

“Patrolling police officers in the area of Mykonos intervened and normalised a dispute between citizens,” a statement released by the Hellenic Police’s South Aegean region press office on Friday read.

“However, three foreigners involved in the incident turned against them, insulting and hitting a police officer with fists.

“The three foreigners were taken to the Mykonos Police Station, where upon their arrival they strongly resisted, pushing and beating three police officers.

“One of the detainees then tried to offer money so that the trial against them would not be completed. The arrested (men) were taken to the Syros Prosecutor’s Office.”

Surrounded by an entourage, including his lawyer, Maguire stayed silent and ignored questions from reporters as he left the court building on Saturday.

Asked by Sky News whether the footballer remains a free man, his lawyer answered: “Right now, yes.”

Maguire was enjoying a break abroad with his fiancee Fern Hawkins, his brothers and his sister on the Greek island. The couple have two young daughters, one born just a few months ago in May.

The sportsman had been given two weeks off of training ahead of Manchester United’s next Premier League game against Crystal Palace on 19 September.

‘Cooperating fully’

A statement from the club released on Friday read: “The club is aware of an alleged incident involving Harry Maguire in Mykonos last night.

“Contact has been made with Harry, and he is fully co-operating with the Greek authorities.

“At this time we will be making no further comment.”
