Gareth Southgate is staying on as England manager ahead of the 2024 Euro campaign, it has been confirmed.
The FA has given Southgate and football coach Steve Holland their “full support”, despite England being knocked out of the world cup in a quarter-final match against France.
Some 23 million viewers tuned in to England’s 2-1 defeat to France at the Qatar 2022 World Cup on ITV and ITVX last Saturday.
FA CEO Mark Bullingham said: “We are delighted to confirm that. Gareth Southgate is continuing as England manager, and will lead our Euro 2024 campaign. Gareth and Steve Holland have always had our full support, and our planning for the Euros starts now.”
The England football team Twitter account wrote: “Thank you for your fantastic support. We’ll see you in March for the start of our #EURO2024 qualifying campaign!!”
Southgate has transformed the team during his six years in charge, reaching the semi-final of the 2018 World Cup and finishing runners-up at Euro 2020.
Despite this rumours had been circulating about Southgate’s future at the team after he said he could step down as England manager because of the criticism he has faced.
“I’ve found large parts of the last 18 months difficult,” Southgate said after the France defeat. “For everything that I’ve loved about the last few weeks, I still have [how things have been for] 18 months. What’s been said and what’s been written, the night at Wolves, there’s lots of things in my head that’s really conflicted at the moment.
“So what I want to make sure, if it’s the right thing to stay, is that I’ve definitely got the energy to do that. I don’t want to be four or five months down the line thinking I’ve made the wrong call. It’s too important for everybody to get that wrong.”
