Should PSG have had a penalty? Bayern Munich make lucky escape after Kimmich appears to foul Mbappe in Champions League final

PSG were unlucky not to win a penalty in the Champions League final after Bayern Munich’s Joshua Kimmich appeared to foul striker Kylian Mbappe.

The French side were trailing in the Lisbon showpiece with Kingsley Coman’s headed goal the only difference between the sides in a tight game.

They looked to have got back into the game with 20 minutes remaining, however, as Neymar released Mbappe and the Frenchman went down in the box after taking on Kimmich and Niklas Sule.

The initial reaction from the commentary box was that a correct decision had been made.

“[Referee] Daniele Orsato was looking right at that and decided Bayern Munich got the ball,” said Darren Fletcher on BT Sport.

Co-commentator Steve McManaman agreed: “Yeah, he got back Kimmich… just got a toe in.”

However, on closer inspection it became clear that it was Mbappe’s toe rather than Kimmich’s which deflected the ball.

“In fact he doesn’t get a touch,” McManaman continued, “he kicks Mbappe’s foot. They’ve got away with one.”

Fletcher then revealed that the video assistant referee had not reviewed the decision, despite it appearing to be a clear foul.

Former Premier League referee Peter Walton agreed with McManaman that a penalty should have been given.

“I think the excellent position that the referee took sold the decision to both the players [who did not appeal] and the VAR. We can see there was co.ntact with Mbappe’s heel there and that could have been given as a penalty kick.”
