David Baddiel, Frank Skinner and Lightning Seeds perform Three Lions for England fans ahead of Euro 2020 final

David Baddiel and Frank Skinner have reunited with The Lightning Seeds to perform Three Lions for England fans ahead of the Euro 2020 final against Italy.

The band performed a 30-minute set at London’s 229 venue before being joined by the comedians for a rendition of the 1996 hit for 200 lucky fans who managed to bag a £10 ticket at 9am on Sunday.

The venue was awash with St Georges flags as Sir Geoff Hurst, who scored a hat-trick when England won the 1966 World Cup final, introduced the pair to the stage.

Dan Grech, 32, told i the gig was “absolutely electric” with “positivity that I haven’t known in the UK for a year”

Jordan Alamey, 28, from Islington in North London, said he managed to get a ticket to see the “best song in the world” performed live through a friend.

“It’s the quintessential British song, it gets you in the mood and gives you goosebumps,” he added.

Security guards reportedly gave up on attempts to remove people from standing up on their chairs at the show which started at 1pm.

Kate Genery, 35, from Tunbridge Wells, Kent, who was also among the crowd, said: “I’m feeling very pumped for the whole tournament. I’m riding on that wave.

“Considering with Covid-19, everyone’s had a shitty year. You can sense a real buzz in London today, it’s like something is about to pop.”

Three Lions soared back into the UK Top Five this week as hopes that England could win their first international tournament since 1966 rose across the nation.

It is currently at number four in the charts, up from 22 last week, according to the Official Charts Company.

The song’s lyrics have been adopted by the nation, with ministers reportedly warned to stop saying “It’s Coming Home” by Whitehall officials as the phrase “does not go down well overseas”.

On Sunday, prime minister Boris Johnson urged the squad to “bring it home”.

Before the gig, Mr Skinner said: “Football’s coming home and live music is going out again. It’s a brilliant double whammy and I guess a live Three Lions sums it up. Great Times!”

The gig is in support of The National Lottery’s Revive Live Tour, which will run throughout the summer and see artists perform at hundreds of grassroots music venues throughout the country.

Mr Baddiel said: “As a performer whose own stand-up tour has been furloughed since March 2020, I can’t wait to get onstage again. And doing Three Lions on the day England are in the final isn’t a bad day to start.”
