Three England players have been named in Uefa’s official Team of Euro 2020 following their run to the final.
Uefa’s team of technical observers – featuring the likes of former Republic of Ireland striker Robbie Keane, West Ham manager David Moyes, and ex-England manager Fabio Capello – selected an XI which had no room for Golden Boot winner Cristiano Ronaldo or Czech Republic star Patrik Schick.
Kyle Walker, Harry Maguire and Raheem Sterling did feature, however, with fellow finalists Gianluigi Donnarumma, Leonardo Bonuci, Leonardo Spinazzola, Jorginho and Federico Chiesa making up the Italian contingent.
Spinazzola’s Euros were curtailed early when he ruptured his Achilles in the quarter-final against Belgium.
Elsewhere only three non-England or Italy players were given the nod: Spain’s teenage sensation Pedri, Belgium striker Romelu Lukaku and Denmark midfielder Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg.
Here is Uefa’s XI in full:
Gianluigi Donnarumma (Italy); Kyle Walker (England), Leonardo Bonucci (Italy), Harry Maguire (England), Leonardo Spinazzola (Italy); Jorginho (Italy), Pierre-Emile Højbjerg (Denmark), Pedri (Spain); Federico Chiesa (Italy), Romelu Lukaku (Belgium), Raheem Sterling (England)
i‘s honourable mentions
Jordan Pickford
The England goalkeeper only conceded two goals in the entire tournament and saved two penalties in the final shootout.
Cristiano Ronaldo
Ronaldo scored five goals and registered an assist, equalling the men’s international goal record in the process.
Luke Shaw
England’s left-back contributed three assists and of course scored the fastest goal in European Championship final history against Italy. Were you watching, Jose?
Patrik Schick
Schick made a surprise impact with arguably the Goal of the Tournament against Scotland and from there, he didn’t stop scoring. In fact, England were the only team against whom he drew a blank.
Marco Verratti
Verratti missed the early stages with a knee injury but once he came in, he recorded more chances than any other midfielder.
Simon Kjaer
Showed heroic leadership in the immediate aftermath of Christian Eriksen’s collapse and led Denmark from the back defensively too.
Georginio Wijnaldum
Rarely a goalscorer at Liverpool, the Dutchman weighed in with three goals in the group stages and deserved better than the ignominy of a relatively early exit.
Jordi Alba
Alba won possession for Spain in the defensive third more times than any other player at Euro 2020.
Denzel Dumfries
Dumfries put himself firmly on the radar of a host of top European clubs with his performances at right-back for the Netherlands.
