Euros final: Millions of flying ants could descend on Wembley during match – and pester fans across England

Millions of flying ants could descend on England – and Wembley stadium – during the Euros final on Sunday.

The Met Office shared weather radar images which depicted swarms of flying ants around London on Friday, just two days before England take on Italy in the squad’s biggest game for 55 years.

“Our radar is picking up more than just rain this morning – it’s actually insects,” the weather body tweeted. “Whilst there are a few rain showers, many of the echoes are in fact insects.”

The large quantities of flying ants has led to concerns that they could be a nuisance for both players at Wembley and fans watching the Euros across England on Sunday night.

Adam Hart, professor of Science Communication at the University of Gloucestershire and a fellow of the Royal Entomological Society, said he feared “there may be more than three lions on shirts at Wembley”.

In England each year, roughly three months during the summer provide ideal weather conditions for insects to mate while in flight.

Professor Hart said that Friday’s swarms marked the start of the flying ant season – meaning more ants were likely to descend before the summer was through.

“If conditions are right on Sunday there may be more than three lions on shirts at Wembley and all around the country,” he told Sky News.

The ants may also feature at weekend matches at Wimbledon.

According to the Met Office, showers are possible over Wembley during the final, with the temperature likely to be around 17°C.
