England have been hit with a £25,000 fine following three incidents of fan behaviour that took place during the Euro 2020 semi-final win over Denmark at Wembley Stadium.
A laser was directed at goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel’s eyes as Harry Kane took his penalty in extra time, while fans were also heard booing the Danish national anthem before kick-off.
In a separate incident, some supporters lit flares inside the ground.
Uefa said in a statement it had charged the Football Association with the following offences:
- Use of laser pointer by its supporters – Article 16(2)(d) of the UEFA Disciplinary Regulations (DR)
- Disturbance caused by its supporters during the national anthems – Article 16(2)(g) DR
- Lighting of fireworks by its supporters – Article 16(2)(c) DR
Schmeichel initially saved the penalty before Kane scored the rebound to send England to the final, where they will play Italy on Sunday. ITV presenter Mark Pougatch branded the fan responsible for shining the laser an “idiot”.
The conduct of some Three Lions fans during the match has been widely condemned, but former England international Gary Neville has defended those who have jeered the national anthems of opposing teams throughout the tournament.
“When I played in the different countries and our NA [national anthem] was booed,” Neville wrote on Twitter.
“I always took it as the opposition fans trying to unsettle us, drown our fans out and never as some kind of attack on us as people. Same when we did it other teams. Is it really that bad and disrespectful?”
Gary Lineker, on the other hand, has pleaded with fans to show respect to Italy’s anthem in the final.
“If you’re lucky enough to get a ticket for the final, please, please don’t boo the Italian anthem,” he wrote.
“A/ It’s an absolute belter and worth listening to. B/ It’s bloody rude, disrespectful and utterly classless.”
