Jose Mourinho namechecks Arsenal in list of title contenders as Tottenham go top of the Premier League table

Jose Mourinho’s appreciation for Harry Kane grows with each late winner.

That Kane’s goal against West Brom took Spurs to the top of the Premier League was a detail to which Mourinho would prefer to return at the end of the season.

“When you go to stats I always say the stats should be how many goals scored and what he did for his team in the matches he didn’t score,” Mourinho said after the 1-0 victory at the Hawthorns.

“Many would be an incredible history [of goals] plus zero [other effort]. With Kane you have to say goals plus assists, balls recovered, duels won, balls saved in the defensive set-piece. Goals plus these, and these, and these… it is not about goals but about him as a player.”

Another late steal to emulate his bounty against Burnley plus his role in the late winner against Brighton underline the value of Kane to the team and the obduracy necessary in any title campaign.

Not that Mourinho is looking beyond the next engagement.

“When a team plays for the title there is always the relation to your opponent. I would say this team could be champion in many European countries.

“The Premier League is the most difficult to be champion. You can do a good season, lots of points, but you know… Liverpool, Man City, Chelsea, Man Utd, Leicester, Arsenal, etc [will all be challenging].

“I promise you I’m not worried about the others. I don’t care. I just want the team to play match after match, and at the end of season let’s see where we are.”
