When is the FA Cup 3rd round draw? Date, time, how to watch live and when the fixtures are

The FA Cup third round welcomes every Premier League and Championship side to the fold, while over 20 matches in late November clubs in the third tier and below will do battle to join them in the pot.

Traditionally one of the most exciting weekends in the domestic calendar, the FA Cup third round typically presents clubs lower down the ladder with the opportunity to either welcome big names to their stadium or travel to fabled grounds with the hopes of causing the latest upset in the world’s oldest cup competition.

But first, there is a second-round tie to navigate, with 20 matches being held from 27-30 November and a place in the third-round draw awaiting the victors.

When is the FA Cup third round draw?

The FA Cup third-round draw will take place at around 7.10pm on Monday 30 November, just before the second-round tie between non-League sides Canvey Island and Boreham Wood.

When is the FA Cup third round?

The third round proper will take place over the weekend of 8-9 January, with Friday and Monday games also likely.

Will every third-round match be on TV?

Both the BBC and BT Sport currently have the broadcasting rights for the FA Cup in the UK.

Due to the coronavirus pandemic and matches being played behind closed doors, every second-round game this weekend is available to watch online – either on BBC’s digital platforms or EFL’s iFollow platform – while BT Sport and BBC have also picked eight of those 20 matches for TV.

Given England is coming out of its national lockdown on 2 December, some clubs will be able to welcome some fans to their stadium for the third-round matches in January, although that depends on location due to the government’s tier system.

How England’s tier system affects football fans

Tier 1

  • Up to 4,000 supporters can attend outdoor sporting events, or half the stadium capacity, whichever is smaller

Tier 2

  • Up to 2,000 supporters can attend outdoor sporting events, or half the stadium capacity, whichever is smaller

Tier 3

  • No supporters permitted to attend games, which will continue to be played behind closed doors

It therefore remains highly likely that some third-round games will not allow supporters in, so it could prompt the BBC and BT Sport to broadcast more matches than usual.

Last season just six third-round matches were selected for TV, but whether that amount increases, or indeed if all 32 matches are made available to watch online, remains to be seen.
