Liverpool and Man City bosses unite to blast Premier League over five substitutes rule

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp accused Premier League chief executive Richard Masters of “a lack of leadership” by failing to explain in shareholders meetings why they must introduce five substitutes to protect players.

Klopp pointed out that the Premier League is the only major league not to increase the number of permitted substitutions from three to five each game, with the majority of clubs voting against the rule change in recent meetings of chief executives and chairmen.

“Richard Masters sold it completely wrong is my understanding,” Liverpool’s manager said after their draw with Manchester City in which Trent Alexander-Arnold was injured and ruled out of England’s upcoming matches. “We have this situation then. It’s the only league where we have three subs.

“It’s a lack of leadership. They go into [the] meeting, Richard Masters says five subs or three? All the teams have to understand why. It’s not an advantage, it’s a necessity. Here we make fun of the competition by having three subs.”

City manager Pep Guardiola also shared his dismay at the decision for the Premier League to endanger players by not changing the rules like every other league.

“Today the right back from [England] national team is injured, tomorrow it will be another player,” he said. “It’s so demanding for the players. I don’t understand. I don’t know who’s in charge to decide these things.

“I don’t understand how they do not understand this, all the leagues around the world except this league accept to five to protect the players, the football, the physicality. The situation is unusual. It’s different. That’s why I’m still surprised. It’s not about taking advantage, it’s about protecting the players.”
