Bananaman: Comic superhero to make small-screen comeback after 35 years

British comic superhero Bananaman is coming back to screens peeled and ready to save the world in a new television series.

Fox Entertainment is reported to have secured the rights to the cartoon hero from Beano Studios to produce a new show with its Bento Box Entertainment animation division.

The barmy superhero is to have a reboot and Fox Entertainment is looking for writers in the UK to bring Bananaman back to life.

Michael Thorn, Fox Entertainment President, told Broadcast: “Given Bananaman‘s relationship with its readers, maybe we will hook a big fish in the UK.”

Bananaman, a parody of cartoon characters such as Superman and Batman, was the creation of Steve Bright, Dave Donaldson and John Geering and first appeared in comic strip form in Nutty in 1980 before later migrating to The Dandy and Beano.

In 1983, Bananaman and his alter ego schoolboy Eric Wimp (Twinge for television) became a cartoon series on the BBC with The Goodies members Graeme Garden, Bill Oddie and Tim Brooke-Taylor providing the voices.

Plans were afoot in 2014 for a Bananaman movie, although those have yet to come to fruition, but three years later there was a short-lived musical version at the Southwark Playhouse.

With the muscles of 20 men and the brains of 20 mussels, the intellectually-challenged Bananaman is not only super strong but can fly at speed.

Ever alert to the call to action, he has confronted his greatest enemies General Blight, Dr Gloom and Appleman.

Now he is to do battle on screen again elevating the humble fruit from recently relegated loaf ingredient to the fuel of a flying superhero.
