How to watch England vs San Marino: Kick-off time, TV channel and live stream for World Cup 2022 qualifier

Gareth Southgate is expected to name an experimental England line-up for the game against San Marino on Thursday evening.

The England manager made a number of intriguing selection decisions in his squad for the upcoming trio of international fixtures, and that fresh-looking squad is likely to have the biggest impact on the starting line-up this Thursday.

Jude Bellingham, Phil Foden and the returning Jesse Lingard could all feature in midfield, while Conor Coady and Luke Shaw are interesting options for the defence.

But one in-form player who is unlikely to feature is Arsenal star Buyako Saka, who is expected to miss the game as he continues his recovery from a hamstring injury. Fellow attacking option Marcus Rashford has also missed some of England’s training sessions this week as he continues to regain full fitness after the foot injury he picked up against AC Milan last week.

In the absence of Saka and Rashford, as well as the unavailable Jadon Sancho and Jack Grealish, Southgate could hand a debut to Aston Villa forward Ollie Watkins, who has earned his first call-up to the full national squad.

The 25-year-old Watkins has scored 10 Premier League goals in his breakthrough top-flight season, and earlier this week spoke about how he’s tapping into the knowledge of captain Harry Kane to pick up some tips in training.

“I spoke to him a couple of times, just asked him how he trains, how he looks after himself, just to get some inside knowledge on how he works,” Watkins said. “He is someone I can definitely learn off on a day-to-day basis.”

Thursday’s visitors San Marino are the lowest-ranked team in world football and contain a number of part-time players, including second-hand car dealer Lorenzo Lunadei.

“We are nervous because we’re going to face such a great team,” Lunadei said. “We only restarted playing a few weeks ago because the amateur championships in Italy and San Marino were stopped by the government due to the pandemic.

“For this reason, even though we trained individually until February, we should take this into account when we go into the next three World Cup qualifiers over the space of a week.

“I need to travel with the national team so I have to use my holiday allowance for away games. But I am happy to do it as it is my passion.”

Opportunities to experiment will be less available for Southgate as the window progress, with Albania (ranked 66 in the world) next up for the Three Lions at the weekend, before Poland (19th in the FIFA rankings) visit Wembley next week.
