England fans who go to Rome for Euro 2020 quarter-final clash with Ukraine will not be allowed in stadium

Fans travelling to Rome from England for the quarter-final clash with Ukraine will not be admitted to stadium even if they have a ticket, the Italian embassy has said.

Under Italy’s current coronavirus restrictions “anybody who has been in the UK in the previous 14 days, irrespective of their nationality or residency will not be admitted to the stadium even if they have a ticket”, it said.

The statement, issued by the Italian embassy in London, continued: “Only those who can prove that they have arrived in Italy at least six days previously, have observed five days of quarantine, and have taken a post-quarantine Covid-19 test with a negative result will be allowed into the Stadio Olimpico.

“Being exempt from quarantine in Italy for any legal reason, will not translate into permission to enter the stadium. For example, travellers who are transiting through Italy for less than 36 hours or visiting briefly for work reasons are not required to quarantine, but they will not be permitted to enter the stadium.

“Anyone who is found to be failing to observe quarantine will be punished as laid down by the law.

“Fans based in the UK should therefore not travel to Italy to attend the match on Saturday at the Stadio Olimpico in Rome.”

Current Italian rules state UK passengers travelling to Italy must provide proof of a negative coronavirus test taken 48 hours before travelling and then they must isolate for five days, meaning they would not be able to attend the match.

The Italian government has threatened rule-breakers who travel from the UK and try to watch the game in public with fines of up to £2,500.

UK nationals living in Europe are able to travel to the game without quarantining as long as they have proof of full vaccination or a negative test.

The FA has returned its allocation of 2,560 tickets and they will now be sold to registered England fans who do not live in the UK through the Uefa website.

Downing Street have said people should not be travelling to amber list countries such as Italy in any case – and have told fans to stick to the rules.

The Prime Minister’s spokesperson said: “Obviously we appreciate how fans will want to do everything possible to support the England team but we do need to balance that against the need to protect public health.

“We would urge everyone to comply with the guidelines and rules that we have in place.”
