Harry Kane: Nuno Espirito Santo explains starting line-up decision on Tottenham striker for Wolves clash

Harry Kane could make his first appearance of the season after being named on Tottenham’s bench for this afternoon’s game against Wolves.

The 28-year-old was subjected to boos and chants of “City, City” by Wolves supporters as he made his way into Molineux after coming off the Tottenham coach.

Kane was left out of Tottenham’s matchday squad for last Sunday’s 1-0 win over Manchester City and remained in London in midweek as an under-strength squad travelled to Portugal to face Pacos de Ferreira in the Uefa Conference League.

When asked by Sky Sports whether he was tempted to start Kane, Nuno Espirito Santo replied: “Are we talking about the team or about Harry? Harry is in the squad, he doesn’t start. The team is the same [as against Manchester City] because I honestly think that we did a good job. The boys are ready.”

Kane has been linked with a move to Manchester City after declaring his intention to leave Tottenham before the end of last season. City have reportedly had a £100m bid rebuffed by Spurs chairman Daniel Levy but are reportedly preparing another offer before the transfer window closes on 31 August.

Kane, who has three years remaining on his Spurs contract, believes he has a gentleman’s agreement with Levy to leave Spurs following the club’s failure to qualify for this season’s Champions League.

Espirito Santo reiterated his stance that his “job here is not to convince players to play for Tottenham Hotspur, it is to prepare players to play for Tottenham Hotspur,” on Friday in relation to Tanguy Ndombele’s future at the club.

Tottenham’s club-record signing is yet to play under Espirito Santo in competitive games or pre-season matches and wants to leave the club.

Tottenham team to play Wolves: Lloris, Tanganga, Sanchez, Dier, Reguilon, Hojbjerg, Skipp, Dele, Lucas, Bergwijn, Son (Subs: Gollini, Doherty, Davies, Sessegnon, Winks, Lo Celso, Gil, Kane, Scarlett)
