Harry Kane failed to report for Tottenham training on Monday morning with a transfer to Manchester City appearing to edge closer.
The England captain was due back at the club’s Hotspur Way training centre for a Covid-19 test following a three-week holiday after Euro 2020.
However, it is understood that Kane did not arrive as planned, casting more doubt on his future.
Kane hinted at the end of last season that he would like to join City, but the Premier League champions have indicated they will not pay the sort of £150million fee required to tempt Spurs to the negotiating table.
Spurs, who face City at home on the opening day of the season, have declined to comment.
The 28-year-old is said to be keen to leave the club this summer in order to win trophies, but with three years left on his contract, Tottenham have no intention of selling their prized asset.
Speaking last month, Tottenham’s new manager Nuno Espirito Santo said club chairman Daniel Levy had assured him that Kane would stay.
“What I can say about that is Harry Kane is one of the best football players in the world and he’s with us, he’s our player, he’s Tottenham’s player,” Nuno said.
“All the conversations that we had, all of the squad that we have available – and we have a lot of good players – I can count on. I am counting on each and every one of them.”
Kane has been in the Bahamas following England’s run to the Euro 2020 final and looks to have set his stall out to force a move from the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
Meanwhile, City’s pursuit of Kane’s England teammate Jack Grealish gathered pace last week.
Pep Guardiola expects to complete the £100m signing with Grealish also returning from holiday on Monday.
Aston Villa have offered their captain a new contract, worth a reported £200,000 a week, in a bid to convince him to remain with his boyhood club.
But City are confident that the 25-year-old has already made up his mind that his future lies at the Etihad with a team that consistently competes for honours at home and in the Champions League.
