A man who allegedly posted an offensive message online after England’s Euro 2020 defeat to Italy has been charged with sending an obscene message on social media.
Bradford Pretty, 49, is accused of making racist remarks after the Three Lions’ campaign ended in heartbreak when England players Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho and Bukayo Saka missed their penalties in the final.
Mr Pretty, a plasterer from Folkestone, Kent, was arrested on 13 July before being released from custody pending further evaluation of the case.
The Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) has authorised Kent Police to charge Mr Pretty with sending an obscene message via a social media network, it was announced on Tuesday.
He is due to appear at Folkestone Magistrates’ Court on 6 October.
Senior Crown Prosecutor Mark Tavender said: “We made the decision to charge Mr Pretty after reviewing a file of evidence from Kent Police relating to allegations of racist online abuse after the Euros 2020 final.
“The Crown Prosecution Service reminds all concerned that criminal proceedings against Mr Pretty are now active and that he has a right to a fair trial.
“It is extremely important that there should be no reporting, commentary or sharing of information online which could in any way prejudice these proceedings.”
