What do Harry Redknapp, Micah Richards, Mark Wright and Potton Bowls Club have in common? They are all involved in the Carabao Cup fourth round draw, that’s what.
Potton Bowls Club, based in the market town of Sandy in Bedfordshire, will host the draw after one of its members, Arsenal fan Gary Gunn, picked it as his chosen venue after winning an EFL competition.
“It’s not often things like this happen in Potton, it’s a small market town and our bowls club is at the heart of the community,” Gunn said. “We’re excited already at the prospect of hosting the Carabao Cup draw, and we know the whole town is going to be smiling from ear to ear when the cameras arrive.”
Manchester City, winners of the trophy in five of the last six seasons, safely progressed from the third round after thumping Wycombe Wanderers 6-1. Phil Foden was on the scoresheet in that one and after the game it emerged that his French bulldog is called Carabao. Delightful. Elsewhere, Liverpool secured their passage with a comfortable 3-0 win over Norwich City and Brentford put seven past crisis club Oldham Athletic.

A couple of Premier League teams were brought down a peg or two by lower league opponents, though, with Everton losing to QPR on penalties and Watford humbled 3-1 at home by Stoke City. Sunderland, meanwhile, are the sole representative from League One in the fourth round draw, although they could be joined by AFC Wimbledon who will be out to cause a shock against Arsenal this evening.
There are three all top-flight affairs taking place in the remaining third round ties on Wednesday night with Chelsea hosting Aston Villa, Manchester United entertaining West Ham and Wolves welcoming back Nuno Espirito Santo and his new club Spurs for the second time already this season.
The clubs that have progressed to the fourth round will have just over a month to wait to play their fixtures as the eight matches are pencilled in for the week commencing Monday 25 October.
This year’s Carabao Cup final is scheduled to take place on Sunday 27 February next year.
