No Grealish, Foden or Bellingham: England name squad for Wales and Latvia

Jude Bellingham, Phil Foden and Jack Grealish have all missed out on Thomas Tuchel’s latest England squad.

Real Madrid midfielder Bellingham was recently voted England men’s player of the year but despite returning to action following shoulder surgery in late September, Tuchel has opted not to pick the No 10.

Foden and Grealish had also seemingly played their way back into contention with a starting place on the left wing among England’s most open contests during this World Cup season.

However, Tuchel appears to favour both Anthony Gordon and Marcus Rashford for now, the pair retaining their spots as expected.

Meanwhile, Arsenal’s Bukayo Saka returns to the fold after missing the last squad through injury, which is why teammate Noni Madueke – among the standouts during the last England camp – misses out this time.

“We have unfortunately two injuries at the moment with Tino [Livramento] and Noni [Madueke] and we bring Bukayo Saka in to replace Noni, and Jarell Quansah was a late call-up last time and he will stay in camp,” Tuchel said.

“[Saka is] a crucial player for Arsenal. He needs to prove a point because we took some steps in the last camp and I have no doubt that he’s ready for that.”

In central midfield, Adam Wharton has been dropped, while Elliot Anderson keeps his place after impressing against Andorra and Serbia.

Anderson arguably leads the battle to partner Declan Rice in midfield at next year’s World Cup, with Tuchel also favouring Ruben Loftus-Cheek and Jordan Henderson over Wharton.

England host Wales in a friendly at Wembley Stadium on Thursday 9 October before travelling to Latvia for a World Cup qualifier on Tuesday 14 October.

The Three Lions have enjoyed a perfect qualifying campaign so far, winning all five matches and scoring 13 goals without conceding once.

England could seal a place at next year’s World Cup with victory over Latvia, but only if Serbia drop points against Albania or Andorra.

“Now, it is about creating habits out of the standards that the group set for themselves,” Tuchel added.

“We want to prove a point that we are ready to take the next steps and build from what we started in the last camp.

“It counts straightaway. We go into a World Cup season and the competition is on. The message has not changed. We will use these two matches to take the next steps.”
