‘Today I did not see my football’: Maurizio Sarri launches defence of playing style and insists he is not worried about Chelsea future

Maurizio Sarri insists he is not worried about his future as Chelsea manager after his side were humiliated by Manchester City.

Pep Guardiola’s team scored within four minutes and hit six in total past Sarri’s hapless players in what City’s manager later described as the best performance he had seen at the Etihad Stadium since he took charge.

With a fortnight until Sarri is set to lead Chelsea in the Carabao Cup final, against Manchester City at Wembley, questions are being asked of the Italian, who joined in the summer, and whether he should remain in charge.

“I’m worried about my team, I’m worried about the performance, [but] my job is always at risk, so I’m not worried about that,” Sarri said.

‘I didn’t see my football’

Chelsea’s manager also defended his “Sarri-ball” style which has been badly criticised following yesterday’s hammering by City and the 4-0 defeat to Bournemouth, both coming in their previous two away games.

“Today I didn’t see my football,” Sarri said. “We need only to understand the reason why at the moment it is isn’t working. We need to understand the reason, it’s not easy. At the beginning we played better away than home, now we’re playing better at home than away, something is changing. At the moment I’m not able to see the reason but I have to work for this, I think. My target is to play my football. At the moment we’re playing another football.”

Guardiola, meanwhile, swooned over the performance of his players. “The first four chances, we had scored three,” he said. “It was not easy. We had to defend deeper in the last part of the first half. We moved them. They create and they jam and they cause you problems. Six goals against Chelsea isn’t easy.”

Defining point in title race?

The three points completed a stunning week for City which could be a defining point in the title race. They moved back to the top of the Premier League table on goal difference, albeit Liverpool having a game in hand. But in eight days playing Arsenal and Chelsea at home and Everton away they have earned nine points, scored 11 goals and conceded only once.

“We’re so pleased for this week not just today, but Arsenal and Everton,” Guardiola said. “One week ago we played Newcastle [and lost], remember? Three difficult games in a week and playing the way we played, with that intensity, the players were outstanding.I can just say to them: thank you.”

He added: “Liverpool have one more game than us I think it’s going to finish in the last games [of the season].”
