Liverpool are on fire, says Jurgen Klopp but Brendan Rodgers bemoans Leicester defensive mentality in defeat

Jürgen Klopp insisted he does not take performances like Liverpool’s against Leicester for granted as his side went 64 top-flight games unbeaten at home for the first time in the club’s history with a thrashing of the Foxes.

After a lively opening from both sides, Jonny Evans gifted Liverpool the lead as he headed through his own net in the 21st minute, before Diogo Jota continued his fine start to life at Liverpool as he headed the hosts’ second in the 41st minute, becoming the first player to score in each of his first four home top-flight league appearances for Liverpool.

Roberto Firmino saw a host of chances come out off the post, cleared off the line and saved before he finally headed his second goal of the season to cap a fine performance by an injury-hit Liverpool, as they rose to second in the table, level on points with leaders Tottenham.

“We deserved it,” Klopp said. “The boys played an incredible game against a top, top, top opponent. I don’t take things like this for granted. The boys were on fire football-wise.

“The front line defended really well. We should have scored more goals. I like the overall performance – the result and clean sheet. We defended incredibly well.”

It did not go to plan for Brendan Rodgers on his return to the club he almost steered to the Premier League title in 2014, as his Leicester side missed the chance to go top of the table themselves as they suffered their third defeat of the season.

The Foxes created plenty of chances throughout the match – mustering 11 shots at goal at Anfield – but they could not keep a relentless Liverpool out down the other end.

“We, first half in particular, were too passive and defending the space, but didn’t have enough contact. We gave away poor goals,” Rodgers said.

“We had a good opportunity on the counter with Harvey Barnes, but overall when you are passive like that your football is not quite the same.

“It’s mentality – you have to get up to the ball. We were happy for them to have it in their own half, but as soon as it came into our territory, we were not as aggressive as I would like.

“Unlike the game last year, when we lost at home, this is a game we can reflect on, analyse and move on.”
