The nature of a congested Premier League table means Manchester United can go up seven places with a victory over winless West Brom this weekend.
A fortnight on from that vital turnaround against Everton, the pressure on Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has eased.
But it is never more than 90 minutes away and he will be reliant on his men to build some momentum with a first home win of the season in the Premier League.
Luke Shaw was the biggest casualty of the 3-1 win at Goodison Park. The left-back suffered a hamstring injury and was ruled out for a month.
Alex Telles should replace him despite confusion arising from reports in Brazil during the international break which suggested the 27-year-old had tested positive for coronavirus for a second time. Telles has subsequently received a negative test.
Victor Lindelof missed United’s last outing with a back problem but it is not thought to be serious and the centre-back should be able to return.
It’s in attack that Solskjaer has bigger problems and that could hand Edinson Cavani his first start since signing from Paris Saint-Germain in the summer.
United’s attacking headache
Anthony Martial is expected to be passed fit, but the forward spent time training alone while on international duty with France after hurting his back.
Jesse Lingard is still recovering from the tendon problem that has plagued him all season, while Mason Greenwood (illness) will undergo a late assessment.
Marcus Rashford, who withdrew from the England squad with a shoulder injury, is also a doubt.
There is still no return date on Eric Bailly’s return from his latest muscle injury, while Paul Pogba is set for a place on the bench again with uncertainty over his future being fuelled by his latest comments on France duty.
West Brom sit 18th in the Premier League table going into the weekend’s action having failed to win any of their opening eight games. On paper, at least, it presents the perfect opportunity for United to finally banish their Old Trafford hoodoo.
