Ryan Giggs, the Wales national team manager, has denied an allegation of assault made against him.
According to newspaper reports, he was arrested at a home in Manchester on Sunday after an alleged disturbance but was later released on bail.
The former Manchester United winger, 46, is “cooperating with the police and will continue to assist them with their ongoing investigation”, said a statement released on his behalf, according to the BBC.
The Football Association of Wales (FAW) has cancelled a press conference scheduled for Tuesday after saying it is “aware of an alleged incident” involving the coach.
‘Aware of an alleged incident’
The Sun reported that Giggs was arrested on suspicion of assaulting his girlfriend Kate Greville on the weekend.
Greater Manchester Police told the newspaper that a woman in her 30s sustained minor injuries but did not require any treatment.
A spokesman for the FAW said: “The FAW is aware of an alleged incident involving the men’s national team manager Ryan Giggs.
“The FAW will be making no further comment at this current time.”
On Tuesday, Wales were due to announce their squad for the upcoming friendly against the USA, on 12 November, as well as Nations League fixtures with the Republic of Ireland and Finland.
Giggs became Wales manager in January 2018. He has since led the team to qualify for the Euro 2020, which will take place next year due to the coronavirus pandemic.
As a player, Giggs won 64 caps for Wales. At Manchester United, he won 13 Premier League titles, two Champions Leagues, four FA Cups and three League Cups.
