LONDON STADIUM — Jose Mourinho launched an impassioned defence of his coaching methods after Tottenham slipped further away from the top four with a 2-1 defeat to West Ham.
Michail Antonio fired the Hammers in front after just five minutes, ghosting in behind Eric Dier to beat Hugo Lloris from close-range from Jarrod Bowen’s cross.
Jesse Lingard continued his fine form for his new club, smashing a confident finish past Lloris to double his side’s lead. The linesman initially adjudged the Manchester United loanee to be offside but a VAR check showed he was just on.
Lucas Moura brought Spurs back into the contest with a header from Gareth Bale’s corner but Spurs were unable to find an equaliser, first Bale and then Son hitting the woodwork in the closing stages.
The result saw West Ham overtake Chelsea into fourth place in the table, nine points clear of Spurs in ninth. Since beating Arsenal in December, Spurs have only won three of their last 13 Premier League matches, against Leeds, Sheffield United and West Brom.
When asked whether he was starting to question himself due to Tottenham’s poor form, Mourinho responded: “No, not at all, zero. Sometimes the results are the consequences of multiple situations in football. Mine and my coaching staff’s methods are second to nobody in the world.”
While Tottenham face an uphill battle to qualify for next season’s Champions League through their league position, West Ham have propelled themselves firmly into contention after winning seven of their previous nine games.
“What West Ham didn’t use to do was win consistently or play consistently well,” said a delighted David Moyes. “Undoubtedly we are now ahead of expectations. We have done half a job and now we need to finish the job off and finish in the European spots, that’s the aim.”
