After Tottenham sacked Jose Mourinho last Monday, the recruitment process is under way to find his replacement.
Mourinho was dismissed after 17 months in charge, with Spurs currently seventh in the Premier League with five games remaining.
Former Spurs midfielder Ryan Mason has been named interim head coach for the remainder of the season.
Mason enjoyed a win in his first game in charge, at home to Southampton, but he then lost the Carabao Cup final 1-0 to Manchester City on Sunday, with Spurs largely outplayed at Wembley.
Now Daniel Levy will be considering his options when deciding who takes the reins from Mourinho, with the favourite from last week now seemingly out of contention.
Next Tottenham manager contenders
Old favourite – Julian Nagelsmann – Was 7-2 (19 April), now 6-1 (as of Monday 26 April)
With Bayern Munich also looking for a new manager this summer after Hansi Flick announced his intentions to leave the club, Julian Nagelsmann could be a man in demand.
And it appears Bayern could have secured the 33-year-old’s services already, with Bild reporting a deal has been agreed between the Bundesliga champions and the RB Leipzig boss.
Nagelsmann is one the most desirable young managers in European football, and masterminded Leipzig’s 4-0 aggregate victory over Spurs in the last 16 of the Champions League last season. Leipzig went on to lose at the semi-final stage. This year they are seven points behind Bundesliga leaders Bayern with three games remaining.
New favourite – Maurizio Sarri – Was 16-1, now 13/5
A Premier League return for Maurizio Sarri? The Italian left Chelsea by mutual consent in 2019, winning the Europa League during his only season in charge at Stamford Bridge, and then went on to coach Juventus for just shy of one campaign.
Despite winning Serie A, a premature last-16 exit in the Champions League saw Sarri sacked a day after their defeat to Lyon last August, and the 62-year-old has been out of work ever since.
With Nagelsmann close to signing at Bayern, Sarri has emerged as the new favourite for the Spurs job, although Roma’s reported interest could see him move elsewhere as well. His odds may have shortened, but like Nagelsmann a project in his native country could well take his fancy instead.
Brendan Rodgers – Was 5-1, now 6-1
The Leicester manager was deemed a contender for the Chelsea role when Frank Lampard was sacked in January, and while the Blues went with Thomas Tuchel, Brendan Rodgers has once more emerged as a leading contender for a job with one of the Premier League’s Big Six.
The fact Leicester are currently third in the Premier League and have just reached their first FA Cup final since 1969 means Rodgers could arguably view this as a sideways step, but his ability to get the most out of a squad could make him an attractive option for Levy.
Rodgers’ odds have slipped only slightly in the past week, but the Leicester boss would need some persuading, especially if Leicester qualify for the Champions League and Spurs miss out.
Ledley King – Was 9-1, now 20-1
A Tottenham legend, Ledley King joined Spurs as a first-team assistant coach in August last year.
Crucially he has not left the coaching staff upon Mourinho’s dismissal, with the Portuguese joined by Joao Sacramento, Nuno Santos, Carlos Lalin and Giovanni Cerra in leaving the club.
King’s role at the club will therefore increase during the search, and Levy could see this as a popular choice among fans, though the former defender’s lack of managerial experience is likely to count against him.
Massimiliano Allegri – Was 10-1, now 20-1
When a Big Six team has a managerial vacancy, Massimiliano Allegri’s name resurfaces.
The former Milan and Juventus boss has been away from management since 2019, when he left Juve after five years and five straight Serie A titles.
Allegri confirmed in December he was looking for a Premier League role in an interview with The Times.
“I would like to experience the Premier League,” Allegri said. “In Italy, I was in Milan four years. Five years in Juventus. Now I expect [to work again] in Italy, but it is difficult, or in England.
“English football is improving now because there are a lot of foreign trainers. England now is more sophisticated, and more tactical, but is also respecting the tradition of English football. It’s a good balance of the spirit of English football and the new quality and new tactical approach of the new coaches.”
Steven Gerrard – Was 12-1, now 20-1
After steering Rangers to the Scottish Premiership title, Steven Gerrard is among the early frontrunners with bookies for the Tottenham role, which would be the former Liverpool captain’s route back into English football.
Whether Gerrard wants to leave his role with Rangers is another matter given the 40-year-old finally wrestled the title from Celtic in what was his third season at Ibrox.
