Norwich‘s plans to re-sign Oliver Skipp could be hampered by Ryan Mason’s belief that the midfielder is already good enough for Tottenham‘s first team.
England Under-21 cap Skipp, 20, was a standout this season in defensive midfield for the Canaries, who will return to the Premier League as Championship title-winners.
Norwich sporting director Stuart Webber has confirmed that negotiations over a second season-long loan have already been opened with Spurs, the player and his representatives.
Mason, Tottenham’s interim manager following the departure of Jose Mourinho – who had labelled Skipp a “future Tottenham captain” – is likely to be back in his previous role of head of player development in the next few weeks however.
He is therefore set to tell the new manager that Skipp is already ripe for a first-team role with Spurs.
“Oliver Skipp is an incredible talent and one of the most professional guys I have come across in the academy,” he said. “He has had a fantastic season so I’m sure those conversations will be had over the summer. I think Skipp is ready, personally.”
Tottenham host Wolves on Sunday having seen their top-four hopes all but distinguished by last week’s 3-1 loss at Leeds.
Mason denied that low fitness levels were behind failure at Elland Road. “You can point a finger, say certain things but fitness isn’t an issue for our group at all,” he said.
Fitness is certainly a concern for left-back Ben Davies, who is unlikely to feature again this season and is therefore a doubt for the Euros.
The Wales international was picked by Mourinho against Aston Villa in March despite a calf problem and has not featured since.
“I am not sure,” said Mason when asked about Davies’ chances of being fit for a tournament which begins on June 11. “Hopefully he will progress very nicely over the next few days.”
