Former Manchester United footballer Ryan Giggs will go on trial next year accused of assaulting and controlling his ex-girlfriend Kate Greville.
Giggs, 47, appeared at Manchester Crown Court this morning for a preparation hearing and will return for a trial on 24 January next year.
He is accused of assaulting Ms Greville, 36, and causing her actual bodily harm at his home in Worsley, Greater Manchester, on 1 November last year.
He is also accused of controlling and coercive behaviour towards his ex-partner between December 2017 and November 2020.
The charge against Giggs alleges he used violence, isolation, belittling, humiliation, harassment, degradation and abuse against Ms Greville.
The footballer has denied both allegations and previously issued a statement stating he would “look forward to clearing my name”.
Giggs has also been charged with common assault by beating of his ex-girlfriend’s youngster sister, Emma Greville, in the same alleged incident on 1 November last year.
The Football Association of Wales has announced that caretaker boss Robert Page will manage the country at this summer’s Euros.
Giggs temporarily stood down from his role as Wales manager after the allegations first surfaced last year and his assistant Page has been deputising for him ever since.
He is on conditional bail and must not contact Kate or Emma Greville, or go to any address where they are staying.
