Roma appoint ‘great champion’ Jose Mourinho on three-year deal from start of next season

Jose Mourinho will be back in football from next season after agreeing to join Roma as their head coach this summer.

Mourinho, 58, was sacked by Tottenham last month after failing to guide the north London club into contention for a top-four finish in the Premier League.

The Portuguese boss, whose previous experience managing in Italy saw him lead Inter to two Serie A titles and Champions League glory, has signed a three-year deal in Rome.

“Thank you to the Friedkin family for choosing me to lead this great club and to be part of their vision,” said Mourinho. “After meetings with the ownership and Tiago Pinto, I immediately understood the full extent of their ambitions. It is the same ambition and drive that has always motivated me and together we want to build a winning project.

“The incredible passion of the Roma fans convinced me to accept the job and I cannot wait to start next season.”

Club president Dan Friedkin and vice-president Ryan Friedkin said: “We are thrilled and delighted to welcome Jose Mourinho into the AS Roma family. A great champion who has won trophies at every level, Jose will provide tremendous leadership and experience to our ambitious project.

“The appointment of Jose is a huge step in building a long-term and consistent winning culture throughout the club.”

Mourinho lost his job at Tottenham following an unremarkable season that culminated in their exit from the Europa League at the hands of Dinamo Zagreb.

The boss arrived at Spurs having failed to deliver the Premier League title for Manchester United. His last championship came in 2015 when he led Chelsea to the Premier League crown in his second stint at the club.

Mourinho’s tenure at Inter marked the last time the San Siro team had won the Serie A title until this season, where another former Chelsea boss – Antonio Conte – secured the 2020-21 championship for the Milan side on Sunday.

Roma announced earlier on Tuesday that Paulo Fonseca will leave the club at the end of the season. The Stadio Olimpico side sit seventh in Serie A, nine points behind Lazio.

Roma were stunned 6-2 by United in the first leg of their Europa League semi-final last week, and are in preparation for Thursday’s reverse fixture.
