Burnley relegated as Luton all but confirm Premier League drop

Burnley have been relegated from the Premier League after defeat at Spurs, while Luton are effectively down too having lost 3-1 at West Ham.

Vincent Kompany’s side had hoped to set up a final-day decider with Nottingham Forest at Turf Moor, but that will now be a dead rubber.

Meanwhile, Luton need Forest to lose their final two games at a goal deficit of 13 if the Hatters are to have any chance of survival.

Their relegation could be confirmed by this evening if Forest pick up points against Chelsea in the 5.30pm kick-off.

Burnley confirm relegation with Spurs defeat

Tottenham 2-1 Burnley (Porro 32′, van de Ven 82’| Bruun Larsen 25′)

TOTTENHAM HOTSPUR STADIUM — Burnley were relegated back to the Championship after Micky van de Ven’s 82nd-minute goal condemned them to defeat at Tottenham.

The Clarets were on course for the three points they needed when Jacob Bruun Larsen drilled them ahead in the 25th-minute.

It was a short-lived reprieve, with Pedro Porro levelling for Spurs seven minutes later.

Nineteenth-placed Burnley continued to create chances but they could not summon a late onslaught.

Instead, Tottenham finished strongly with Van de Ven’s late goal keeping alive the faint top-four hopes of Ange Postecoglou’s team.

Burnley had only won three away league games all season and nearly went behind in the fourth-minute, but the recalled Charlie Taylor deflected James Maddison’s shot over the bar.

The Clarets responded, with Vitinho able to meet a Wilson Odobert cross, only for Guglielmo Vicario to make a flying save before Cristian Romero beat Lyle Foster to the loose ball.

When Arijanet Muric was called upon to deny Brennan Johnson’s half-volley moments later, three clear-cut chances had been created in the first seven minutes.

It was not until the 25th-minute that another opportunity was fashioned by either team, but it did result in a much-needed breakthrough for Burnley.

Sander Berge strolled through Spurs’ midfield and passed into Bruun Larsen, who provided a fine finish.

Tottenham responded quickly with Porro able to smash home from inside the area to ensure it was all square at half-time.

Both teams created further opportunities after the break with Wilson Odobert firing over in the 57th-minute, but Postecoglou’s side were able to step up a level and relegated the visitors with eight minutes left.

Van de Ven, switched to left-back during the game, cut inside from his unorthodox position and bent into the bottom corner to send Burnley back to the Championship.

Luton on the brink after West Ham send off Moyes in style

West Ham 3-1 Luton (Ward-Prowse 54′, Soucek 65′, Earthy 76’| Sambi Lokonga 6′)

LONDON STADIUM — Luton are set to say farewell to the Premier League after David Moyes waved goodbye to the London Stadium with a victory.

Albert Sambi Lokonga threatened to spoil Moyes’ party and give Luton a chance of taking the survival fight to the final day by heading them into an early lead.

But second-half goals from James Ward-Prowse, Tomas Soucek and teenager George Earthy all but brought Luton’s stint in the top flight to an end.

On Monday the Hammers had called time on Moyes after four-and-a-half years in charge, with Julen Lopetegui waiting in the wings to take over this summer.

The announcement was made in order to give Moyes “the send-off he deserves” following his successful tenure, which included the club’s first European trophy since 1980 in last season’s Europa Conference League.

But while the hosts had little more than sentimentality to play for, Luton had plenty, and it showed in the first half.

Just five minutes had elapsed when Alfie Doughty lifted a cross into the area and Lokonga flung himself in front of Angelo Ogbonna to head home from six yards out.

A lacklustre 45 minutes followed and a few boos accompanied Moyes as he headed for the tunnel at half-time.

However, fans were cheering eight minutes into the second half when Jarrod Bowen raced down the right before crossing low into the box.

Thomas Kaminski tried to kick it clear but only as far as Ward-Prowse, who buried his drive past the grounded Hatters keeper from 14 yards out.

Luton, beset by injuries and bad luck all season, were wilting and in the 65th minute Ward-Prowse crossed from the right, Lokonga headed clear and Soucek swept home.

Youngster Earthy, whose debut against Fulham last month was cut short after he was knocked unconscious and taken to hospital, will remember more about his second appearance as he converted a Mohammed Kudus cut-back for his first senior goal to put the seal on an emotional afternoon for Moyes.
