Son Heung-min’s agency has said he is “clearly the victim” of a blackmail plot after two people were arrested in South Korea for extortion regarding a false pregnancy claim.
A woman in her 20s and man in his 40s are reportedly being investigated by police in Seoul after telling Son the woman was pregnant and demanding several hundred million South Korean won (around £100,000) for their silence.
In a statement, Son’s agency Son & Football Limited said: “The police are currently investigating, so we will let you know the results as soon as they are available.
“We’d like to tell you that Heung-min Son is clearly the victim of this incident.”
According to Son’s legal team, after he filed the complaint to police last week, the woman claimed she was pregnant in June last year and demanded payment.
Tottenham captain Son is the most famous athlete in South Korea and does not have a known wife or children.
In an interview with The Guardian in 2019, Son said: “My father says this and I agree, as well.
“When you marry, the No 1 will be family, wife and kids, and then football. I want to make sure that while I play at the top level, football can be No 1.
“You don’t know how long you can play at the top level. When you retire, or when you are 33 or 34, you can still have a long life with your family.”
Tottenham will hope this case does not distract Son from next Wednesday’s Europa League final in Bilbao, where he is expected to play as a No 10 after Dejan Kulusevski underwent surgery on Wednesday.
