Onana’s Man Utd career takes new turn as Rashford set for £26m transfer

Andre Onana is not giving up hope of resurrecting his Manchester United career when he returns from his loan spell in Turkey and is open to moving to another Premier League club in order to keep his English dream alive.

Onana will spend the rest of this season at Super Lig side Trabzonspor having lost his first-team place at United due to a string of high-profile errors last season.

The Turkish club are understood to be keen on prolonging Onana’s time there after being impressed with him since his summer arrival. The i Paper has been told, however, that the Cameroon international still has aspirations of regaining the No 1 shirt at Old Trafford upon completion of his temporary exile.

Sources close to Onana are also not ruling out trying to engineer a move to another Premier League club, should deposing Senne Lammens in the United goal not be deemed possible.

Lammens has enjoyed an error-free introduction to life at United, with some supporters already dubbing the Belgium international the new “Peter Schmeichel”. The young stopper has impressed behind the scenes at the club’s training base, undertaking additional sessions and showing maturity “beyond his years”. All of that makes Onana’s reintroduction even more unlikely.

Onana turned down a move to Monaco earlier this summer having been given reassurances by United boss Ruben Amorim that he was a big part of his plans. Further errors in the humiliating Carabao Cup exit to Grimsby Town changed the club’s stance.

There is understood to still be interest from France, Turkey and clubs in Saudi Arabia. United are keen to continue to lower their wage bill with further player sales next summer.

Two other loanees will almost certainly leave United permanently then too. United had hoped Jadon Sancho would rediscover his best form on loan at Aston Villa for them to take up the option to extend the castaway’s contract and then sell him on in the close season.

Another failed temporary stint away from Old Trafford means that the club are unlikely to do that, given Sancho’s exorbitant wages, and the 25-year-old will then leave on a free. Where he will move to remains a mystery, with only clubs in Turkey and Saudi Arabia currently understood to be monitoring his situation.

Marcus Rashford’s outlook is looking much rosier. Barcelona are impressed with the England international’s first few months in Spain. His efforts in the Champions League, where he has four goals already, have particularly stood out.

Nine goal contributions in La Liga have also propelled Rashford back in from the cold on the international scene, with him starting one and coming off the bench in England’s final two World Cup qualifiers.

Sources have told The i Paper that Barcelona, at this stage, intend to take up the option to buy Rashford permanently in the summer when his loan spell finishes. They have first refusal to snap him up for £26m.
