Man behind Watford mascot Harry the Hornet says he is ‘stepping away’ from the role

The man behind Watford mascot Harry the Hornet has “officially stepped away” from the position with immediate effect.

Gareth Evans says he is “proud” of his time at the club and will now “return to the stands” as a supporter.

“I have officially stepped away from being the Match Day Mascot at Watford FC,” Evans tweeted on Thursday. “My decision. Proud of what I have achieved, the memories made and the experiences I’ve had – I was privileged and now heavy hearted also. Love you Harry.”

Controversy

Evans gained notoriety after diving in front of Wilfried Zaha after the Crystal Palace winger was booked for simulation, with Roy Hodgson later labelling the fluffy giant insect “disgraceful”.

It is unclear whether Harry the Hornet will appear at Vicarage Road during Watford’s match with Manchester United on Saturday with another person in the costume or if Harry is being discontinued all together.
