Manchester United vs Juventus: TV channel, live stream details, kick-off time, team news and line-ups

Manchester United return to Old Trafford for a Champions League tie with Juventus with the memory of Ross Barkley’s late equaliser at Stamford Bridge fresh in their memories.

Jose Mourinho‘s side will be keen to move on from the 2-2 draw in the Premier League with a home win in the first of their crucial ties against the Old Lady.

Juventus, who have won both their Group H fixtures against Valencia and Young Boys, will be hoping to solidify their chances of topping the group, after United were held to a draw by the Spanish side.

The game also signifies a return to Old Trafford for Cristiano Ronaldo. The Portuguese forward scored 84 goals in 196 games for the club, winning three successive Premier League titles, a Champions League and his first Ballon d’Or.

United will be hoping Ronaldo, who has scored five and set up five goals in his past 10 matches, does not find the shooting boots he possessed for Real Madrid.

Expected line-ups

Alexis Sanchez, Marouane Fellaini, Jesse Lingard, Scott McTominay, Phil Jones and Diogo Dalot were all absent from training on Monday for Manchester United ahead of the tie. Mourinho told journalists assembled on Monday: “The players you saw are the players that are available. Nothing to hide and Alexis is out.”

Mourinho enjoyed some success with a 4-2-3-1 formation against Chelsea which allowed Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial to play with a certain amount of creative freedom. He could employ the same setup against Juventus. After a spell on the sidelines, Antonio Valencia is also expected to return.

Juventus have some injury issues of their own. Daniele Rugani and Sami Khedira remain injured, while a statement from Juventus yesterday read that: “Emre Can will undergo clinical tests and investigations for a thyroid nodule that could also require surgical treatment.”

View from the dugout

Mourinho on Manchester United’s mentality: “If they focus on the performance then I think they will be really happy with themselves. If they focus on the result then I think they will be very, very disappointed.

“I think the work starts immediately when we need to train and to think about the next match, Juventus, and because Chelsea is over and we don’t play them for some months.”

On speculation linking him to the Real Madrid manager’s job“No, I’m happy here. I’m happy to see my contract out to the very last day of that contract and I would like to stay after my contract ends. All I’m thinking about is Manchester United.”

On Antonio Valencia’s recent absence: “The reason was that he was 10 days without training with a problem, not an injury, but a problem that he had a very complicated surgery on his mouth. And 10 days without training and he needed a little bit of time to recover some level after that.”

On his irritation at the press conference:“I don’t want to speak about Pogba. I don’t want to speak about individuals, I don’t want to speak to the Spanish journalists because they are only interested in Real Madrid and Cristiano Ronaldo.”

Juventus manager Massimiliano Allegri on dropping points against Genoa at the weekend: “We conceded a goal from a loss of focus. We played, from a certain point of view, with our heads in Manchester.

“We had to win. We went from frantic to sleeping and vice versa. These are situations that shouldn’t happen – they’re games in which the Scudetto can be won and lost. It was coming, we could see it from the touchline. A good 10 minutes before the goal, we were already drifting out of the game.

“I think it’ll be good for us, everyone will now remember that nothing can be taken for granted.”

i verdict

Manchester United showed heart to take a 2-1 lead at Stamford Bridge and Martial in particular provided the incision this side has so desperately needed with an excellent brace. However, Juventus have been performing well domestically and in Europe. Undefeated in nine matches in Serie A, with two wins from two in Group H, you would expect a Juventus side enjoying an excellent run of Paulo Dybala form to give United’s frail defence a horrible time.

United have been improving of late, but whether it will be enough to match the quality of the Italian Champions is another matter. In addition, if you were to back anyone to find their shooting boots at the right time to upset their old club, it would be someone with a Cristiano Ronaldo-sized ego.
