One of the most notable deals on a relatively quiet day was a player going nowhere: winger Anthony Martial extended his contract at Manchester United until June 2024. The Frenchman’s agent had said his client wanted to leave the club in the summer, but Martial had a change of heart following the exit of Jose Mourinho.
The arrival of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer as caretaker manager was a major part of convincing Martial to change his mind. “For a young man, he has a good footballing brain, which, when coupled with his exceptional talent, makes for a player with an exciting future ahead of him,” Solskjaer said.
‘Loving my time’
Martial said: “I would like to thank Ole and his coaching staff for their belief in me and for helping me to take my game to the next level. I am loving my time at this club.

“From the day I joined, I have been made to feel part of the United family and I have been incredibly humbled and overwhelmed by the warmth and love of our fans, who continue to amaze me with their support.”
Marouane Fellaini, however, left United for Chinese club Shandong Luneng in a deal worth almost £10m, ending the Belgian’s five-and-a-half years at the club and indicating a change in direction of their footballing style away from the oft-booked midfielder.
