West Ham are virtually safe from relegation, but not mathematically, meaning Premier League survival may not be secured until the final day of the season.
With two league matches remaining David Moyes’ side are almost there, sitting in 16th on 37 points.
Last Friday’s 3-1 win over Watford helped West Ham take a huge step towards sealing their place in the Premier League last season.
But it is not a 100 per cent guarantee, and while there is still a slim chance of relegation, West Ham fans will be keeping an eye on the table closely.
Remaining West Ham fixtures
West Ham are in action at Manchester United on Wednesday night, and then host 17th-placed Aston Villa on Sunday 26 July.
All final-day matches have a 4pm BST kick-off time, with Watford away to Arsenal and Bournemouth away to Everton.
Relegation permutations
It would take a monumental set of circumstances for West Ham to go down, with odds of 750-1, but here goes just in case…
West Ham are 16th in the table and three points clear of both 17th-placed Villa and Watford in 18th. A point at Manchester United on Wednesday night would be enough to guarantee survival, meaning they can rest easy against Villa on Sunday.
Should West Ham lose at Old Trafford, they will still be all-but safe due to their goal difference, which is currently -13 to Villa’s -26 and Watford’s -27.
Not only would West Ham have to lose heavily at Manchester United, they would also have to ship in plenty against Villa as well to go down.
In the worst of all worst-case scenarios, if West Ham lose 5-0 at Manchester United, they would then be relegated if they lost 5-0 to Villa as well.
Given West Ham have scored more goals than Villa (47 to 40), there would have to be a goal difference swing of 14 to send the Hammers down.
Crazier things have happened, Leicester’s 5000-1 title win, Greece winning Euro 2004, Will Young beating Gareth Gates in Pop Idol, but it would be a final-day like no other in history if West Ham get relegated.
“I’ve got to say, I think we’re in a good position,” West Ham manager David Moyes said after the win over Watford. “A lot of teams will struggle to get to our points total, but I can’t say they won’t, we’ve still got to do our job.”
