TURF MOOR — The first Premier League goal of John Egan’s career earned Sheffield United a deserved point as Chris Wilder’s side maintained their hopes of European football.
The same could be said for Burnley, who led thanks to James Tarkowski’s effort late in the first half but, until the Blades defender struck 10 minutes from time, it looked like being a frustrating afternoon for the visitors.
United missed a string of chances until a well-worked short corner saw Ben Osborn chip the ball in, Billy Sharp head on to the far post and Egan lash home an unstoppable finish.
Tarkowski’s goal had been far more routine, and also from a set-piece, as Jay Rodriguez flicked on Dwight McNeil’s free-kick and the Burnley defender slid the ball in from close range.
It was a goal that came against the run of play but Burnley could and should have wrapped up all three points just seconds before Egan’s dramatic contribution.
Promising youngster McNeil was left to rue a bad miss after UnIted keeper Dean Henderson parried a Rodriguez shot straight to him and the winger dragged his shot wide.
Such wastefulness was in keeping with both teams’ performances with Oli McBurnie being denied inside the opening two minutes by the outstretched boot of Burnley keeper Nick Pope.
Before their goal, Burnley only carved out one meaningful chance, on a stunning counter-attack, which ended with Matej Vydra screwing his effort wide.
McNeil might have made up for his earlier miss with virtually the last kick of the game but Henderson dived smartly to his left to keep out his 25-yard strike.
