ST MARY’S — Southampton manager Ralph Hasenhüttl revealed that trying to catch goalkeeper Ederson out of position was part of the preparation to their surprise win against Manchester City.
Che Adams scored the only goal of the match in the 16th minute with a sensational strike, lobbing the Brazilian with a first-time, 40-yard shot. But he was helped by Ederson standing on the edge of his own penalty area when Southampton quickly won the ball in midfield.
“If you have goalkeeper like him also playing like a sweeper it’s normal he’s not in a perfect position,” Hasenhuttl said.
“Our goal was sometimes to force mistakes and if they make one be clinical and quick in your mind. It was fantastic Che in that moment saw the goalkeeper was far from his goal and made a perfect first touch.
“We knew against an opponent like that you have to run more, fight more, sprint more, be brave and have in the end a little bit of luck.”
Adams had not scored a goal for Southampton since joining from Birmingham City for £15million a year ago. “It means a lot to him and us,” Hassenhuttl added. “When you hear how much the players celebrating with him when he entered dressing room you know how much he deserve to score.”
City dominated the remainder of the match but were unable to score. They went on to have 74 per cent possession and 26 shots on Southampton’s goal, but Guardiola lost three consecutive away league games for the first time in his career.
City’s manager, however, insisted that he would encourage his goalkeeper to continue playing in the same way.
“We use our keeper to build up our play,” Guardiola said. “We use our keeper to play better. It gives us a lot. The mistake is part of the game but we didn’t lose for that reason.”
