FWA Player of the Year winners list: who’s won from 1948 to present day – and when this year’s winner is announced

The Football Writers’ Association Footballer of the Year appears to be a straight shootout between Jordan Henderson and Kevin De Bruyne.

Liverpool’s Premier League-winning campaign has resulted in their captain being tipped for the individual accolade, with Henderson playing a pivotal role in ending that 30-year wait for the title.

De Bruyne meanwhile has shone despite Manchester City’s title defence faltering, with the Belgian recording 19 Premier League assists so far this season.

Members of the FWA have until midnight on Thursday to decide whether Liverpool’s midfield engine or City’s indispensable playmaker is worthy of the Football of the Year award.

A host of other Liverpool players including Sadio Mane, Virgil van Dijk and Trent Alexander-Arnold are outsiders for the award given the club’s runaway dominance this season, while Jamie Vardy could pick up votes with the Leicester striker on course to win the Golden Boot.

When is the FWA Player of the Year announced?

The announcement is set to take place on Friday, although the timings have not been revealed. The FWA revealed Vivianne Miedema as the 2019-20 Women’s Footballer of the Year at 10am BST on 1 July.

Manchester City’s Raheem Sterling picked up last year’s award, which has been handed out since 1948, where Sir Stanley Matthews was the first winner.

Former Arsenal striker Thierry Henry is the only three-time winner of the award, with seven players picking up the prize twice.
