Thomas Tuchel says “there’s no room for disappointment” at Chelsea after his first game in charge ended with a goalless draw against Wolves.
Chelsea dominated possession against Nuno Espirito Santo’s side but struggled to find their rhythm for much of the game. Both teams had late chances to win it but, ultimately, Tuchel had to settle for a point in his first game since replacing Frank Lampard at Stamford Bridge.
“I just spoke in the dressing room and told everybody that there is no room for disappointment now,” Tuchel said after the match.
“There’s no room for doubt. On the opposite [side of things], I was very happy with the performance… we were very well organised, we were brave, we had courage and we played really as a team offensive-wise and defensive-wise.”
Chelsea have won just one of their last six games in the Premier League, but Tuchel was at pains to accentuate the positives.
“It was hard work, but we never lost intensity and for that I am very happy,” he said. “If this is our starting point, I’m looking forward to where we will end up.”
Asked about his first impressions of the team he’s inherited from Lampard, he said: “First of all, I see an exciting mix between experienced players, personalities and talented guys… I found a group yesterday that was totally open to our ideas, to our beliefs, to our tactical approach and to our help.”
He looked to manage expectations when asked whether Chelsea are still in contention for the title. “It’s far away. I don’t think so,” he said.
“Honestly, when you sign for Chelsea as a player or, like me, as a manager, it’s absolutely right that you sign for the expectation that you challenge for titles… at the same time, we have to be realistic and, at the moment, there are a lot of teams between us and [fourth] place.”
