England squad predictions: i’s 26-man team for Euro 2020 and the big selection dilemmas facing Southgate

With England set to name their squad for Euro 2020 at 1pm on Tuesday, i runs through the selection dilemmas facing Gareth Southgate and selects the players we expect to be named on the 26-man list.

Trent Alexander-Arnold

That the Liverpool right-back is not a guaranteed name on the squad list – possibly even as a starter – has shocked many in football, but Southgate has been hugely impressed by Manchester City’s Kyle Walker and Kieran Trippier has just won La Liga with Atletico Madrid.

The England manager could take both Alexander-Arnold and Chelsea’s Reece James, or more likely just one, with James seen as a better option as third choice.

Harry Maguire

The centre-back has been one of Southgate’s mainstays in central defence, so an injury to ligaments in his left ankle a fortnight before the squad announcement appeared disastrous. Maguire, though, is expected to be fit for the summer.

Jordan Henderson

The 30-year-old has not played for three months due to a groin injury but has been deemed fit enough to be included. The Liverpool midfielder offers as much, if not more, off the pitch as he does on it, and Southgate will want him involved with the camp.
