Gary Neville believes the “time is right” for the Glazer family to sell Manchester United.
Speaking in light of fan protests at Old Trafford which dominated the build-up to the Premier League match against Liverpool on Sunday, former captain Neville said selling up would be “the honourable thing to do”.
Hundreds of supporters stormed the pitch in protest against the ownership just two hours before kick-off.
“The stadium, if you go behind the scenes, it’s rusty and rotting,” Neville said on Sky Sports. “If you look at the training ground, it’s probably not one of the top five in this country. They haven’t got to a Champions League semi-final for 10 years.
“We haven’t won a league here at Manchester United for eight years. The land around the ground is dormant and derelict, while every other club seems to be developing the fan experience and the facilities.
“The Glazer family are struggling to meet the financial requirements [of the club] and the fans are saying it is time to go. They are going to make a fortune if they sell this football club. If they put it up for sale now, the time would be right and it’d be the honourable thing to do.”
United’s match with Liverpool was put in doubt by the protests which started around two hours before kick-off.
Holding anti-Glazer banners and setting off flares, fans expressed their anger following plans backed by the owners to join the proposed European Super League.
The plans, which collapsed after widespread opposition, added to years of discontent and protests from supporters following the controversial takeover by the Glazers in 2005.
“There’s huge discontent, not just amongst Manchester United fans but across the country,” Neville added. “Fans are saying enough is enough.”
