San Marino 0 (Rossi red card 68′) England 10 (Maguire 6′, Fabbri 15′ og, Kane 27′ pen 31‘ 39′ pen, 42′, Smith Rowe 58′, Mings 69′, Abraham 78′, Saka 80)
England sealed their spot at the 2022 World Cup with a ruthless 10-0 thrashing of minnows San Marino in their biggest ever win in competitive football.
Harry Kane filled his boots with four goals to move level in third with Gary Lineker in the list of all-time England top scorers and break the record for most Three Lions goals in a calendar year.
England broke the deadlock early on through Harry Maguire’s header and dominated the game from then on. Bukayo Saka forced Filippo Fabbri into an own goal before captain Kane fired in four quick goals to make the lead 6-0 at half-time.
Gareth Southgate rang the changes at half-time but England kept the pressure on with substitute Tammy Abraham setting up Emile Smith Rowe for the seventh goal before Tyrone Mings got his first international goal shortly after Dante Rossi was sent off for a second yellow card.
Abraham and Bukayo Saka then finished the rout to leave England clear at the top of qualifying Group I after eight wins and two draws from their 10 games.
Final Group I table
England player ratings
Aaron Ramsdale: Forced into one decent save on debut from Nanni’s smart low shot and dealt well with balls lumped into his box 7
Harry Maguire: Sealed second goal in two games with well-timed header from corner, nice distribution from the back and enjoyed license to roam forward. Taken off at half-time 7
Conor Coady: Mopped up the occasional long ball forward but an otherwise quiet night for the Wolves defender who took the captain’s armband when Kane departed 7
Tyrone Mings: Dealt well with one of the very few San Marino counter-attacks and scored his first England goal with deft header from Alexander-Arnold’s cross 7
Trent Alexander-Arnold: Found it difficult to get in the game early on with San Marino sitting so deep but showed his quality with assists for Mings, Abraham and Saka as game opened up in second half 8
Bukayo Saka: Lively in left wing-back role, showing neat footwork to set up the second and seventh goals before adding the 10th when moved further forward late on 8
Jude Bellingham: Kept things simple to allow attacking players to inflict the damage and was unlucky to have goal ruled out with ferocious shot 8
Kalvin Phillips: Easy night for the Leeds midfielder who found acres of space at the base of England’s midfield as San Marino dropped deep. Little to do before being replaced at half-time 7
Phil Foden: Dangerous when dropping deep and threading through balls for the likes of Saka and Kane. Taken off at half-time 7
Emile Smith Rowe: Movement proved too much for San Marino’s amateurs and linked well with Arsenal club-mate Saka, setting up fourth goal for Kane and capping off bright display with England’s seventh 8
Harry Kane: Continued his prolific form for England with two expertly taken penalties and two more excellent finishes from open play as he closes in on Wayne Rooney’s record 9
Subs
Ben Chilwell: Looked lively after coming on at half-time, pushing up to provide England’s attackers 7
Reece James: Came on as central midfielder after replacing Kane on the hour-mark and looked comfortable enough away from his usual position 6
John Stones: Little to do in dying moments as England’s attacking players put San Marino to the sword 6
Conor Gallagher: Looked comfortable on the big stage, firing excellent cross field pass to Smith Rowe within minutes of coming on for debut. Missed good chance to score 7
Tammy Abraham: Missed excellent chance to score England’s seventh by firing over the bar but then excellent touch teed up Smith Rowe and then chipped in with the 10th. Received absurd yellow card and was unlucky to have another header ruled out for a foul 7
