O2 ARENA — Anthony Joshua can take his first steps towards redemption tonight against Jermaine Franklin.
First, Germany’s Peter Kadiru moved to 15-1 with a thunderous start against Alen Lauriolle, who retired on his stool at the end of the first round.
Benoit Huber beat Juergen Uldedaj in the first major upset of the night, coming out on top by 77-75.
Jordan Flynn maintained his unbeaten record in an equally competitive showing in an eight-rounder with Kane Barker, also finishing 77-75 on the referee’s scorecard.
Ziyad Almaayouf had an easier night’s work in his four rounds as he emerged the clear winner (39-37) against Georgi Velichkov.
Campbell Hatton blitzed Louis Fielding with a first-round stoppage and a body shot that has no doubt done some damage to Fielding’s ribs. Another journeyman down, Hatton looks increasingly ready for more credible opposition.
Daniel Bocianski had another unsuccessful return to the UK, 11 months on from his defeat to Tommy Fury, outclassed by 80-72 in an eight-round defeat to British light-heavyweight prospect John Hedges.
River Wilson-Bent was fortunate not to be stopped earlier as a series of Austin Williams left hooks in the rounds six to seven totally disarmed him, before Wilson-Bent’s corner threw the towel in midway through the eighth. Williams has done all he can to earn a showdown with Felix Cash, who was supposed to be in action himself before pulling out through illness.
That was one of a number of tweaks to the card, with Craig Richards also withdrawing with a hand injury ahead of his fight with Ricards Bolotniks.
Galal Yafai has been drafted in to bolster the card, with the Tokyo gold medallist fighting Moises Calleros.
