Liverpool and Man City share spoils to give Arsenal a title race boost

Liverpool 1-1 Manchester City (Mac Allister pen 50′ | Stones 23′)

Liverpool and Manchester City shared the spoils in one of the most enthralling, end-to-end games of the Premier League season so far.

The result at a rocking Anfield hands Arsenal a boost in the title race after their late victory over Brentford on Saturday sent them top of the league.

Arsenal remain at the summit; ahead of Liverpool on goal difference and one point in front of City.

The Reds were missing a host of first-team stars through injury but went toe-to-toe with Pep Guardiola’s Treble winners in what could be Jurgen Klopp’s final match involved in the rivalry that has defined his time in English football.

City opened the scoring with a perfectly worked training ground routine; John Stones tapping in at at the near-post from Kevin De Bruyne’s pinpoint corner kick.

That goal came with a hint of controversy after City’s Nathan Ake appeared to block Liverpool midfielder Alexis Mac Allister from tracking Stones’s run.

But there was nothing contentious about the equaliser on the other side of half-time.

Ederson, usually so assured when rushing out of goal, horribly mistimed a challenge on Darwin Nunez and left the Liverpool striker sprawled across the box.

Mac Allister converted from the penalty spot to level the game, with a limping Ederson unable to keep out his shot.

Phil Foden, Jeremy Doku, Luis Diaz and Mohamed Salah would all have their chances at either end – as well as two late penalty shouts for Liverpool – but the result felt a fair reflection of an even game between these two great rivals.
