Ruben Amorim has placed Andre Onana and several other squad members on trial in the final few games of the club’s disastrous season – putting the goalkeeper’s long-term Manchester United future in further doubt.
Onana was not in the side thrashed by Newcastle on Sunday, a result that ensured United will finish with their lowest-ever Premier League points haul.
Yet his mistakes against Lyon in United’s Europa League quarter-final first leg last week mean Amorim remains undecided over whether the Cameroonian will stay as his No 1 next term.
United have prioritised signing a goalkeeper in the summer transfer window, with The i Paper told Turkey international Altay Bayindir is likely to leave in order to secure first-team football.

Sources said that a young goalkeeper is the route the club’s new transfer hierarchy will go down.
Whether that new arrival will be first choice or not depends on how Onana does between now and the end of the season.
Onana’s turbulent season
Onana was left out of United’s trip to Newcastle after a turbulent time on and off the pitch over the past few weeks.
The 29-year-old has made eight errors leading to goals since the start of last season, more than any other Premier League goalkeeper in that time. His two costly mistakes denied his side a crucial win in France, days after he had entered into a spat with Lyon’s ex-United midfielder Nemanja Matic.
Onana had claimed United were “way better” than Lyon, with Matic describing him as “one of the worst goalkeepers in Man Utd history” in response.
Away from football, Onana’s wife was the victim of a violent street robbery that left the family needing 24-hour protection. Melanie Kamayou was targeted by a thief who stole her bag and Rolex watch as she got out of her car to meet a friend for dinner in Alderley Edge two weeks ago.
Amorim left Onana at home at the weekend so the United stopper could get his head together ahead of his side’s do-or-die Europa League second leg on Thursday.
While Amorim is expected to stick with Onana for that game after Bayindir failed to impress at St James’ Park, The i Paper has been told no decision has been made yet. Even Onana has been kept in the dark.
Sources say his Onana’s teammates have been supportive of the under-fire goalkeeper and have rallied around him this week.
United’s dreadful form since Amorim came in has pushed the new coach to consider a complete overhaul of the squad in the summer, subject to the amount of funds available. Very few senior players are safe.

Even though they have very little to play for domestically, players have the remainder of the season to prove to the manager they can be part of his revolution.
That includes Onana. Japan goalkeeper Zion Suzuki, Porto stopper Diogo Costa, Brighton’s Bart Verbruggen and AC Milan’s French international Mike Maignan have all been linked with a move to Old Trafford.
A move to bring David De Gea back to Manchester is very unlikely to materialise, several sources confirmed.
