Tottenham on track to unveil Thomas Frank this week – if they pay £10m

Tottenham Hotspur have begun talks with Brentford over a deal to appoint Thomas Frank as their new manager after making a formal approach in the last 24 hours, The i Paper understands.

Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy has moved swiftly to replace Ange Postecoglou, who was sacked last week only 16 days after winning the Europa League.

He is now locked in negotiations with his Brentford counterparts with a feeling that a deal could be ironed out in time for an announcement by the end of the week.

Frank has been Tottenham’s No 1 target and The i Paper revealed last week that the club held talks with him several times.

They had also spoken to Fulham boss Marco Silva on multiple occasions but Frank has several big supporters at Spurs, not least technical director Johan Lange.

Frank is understood to have agreed personal terms in principle with Tottenham although there are other issues still to sort out.

The Dane would want to take his backroom staff from Brentford with him to Tottenham but some – such as assistant boss Justin Cochrane – may stay in west London.

Brentford are not expected to stand in Frank’s way but will be due around £10m in compensation, sources said.

Ipswich Town boss Kieran McKenna is one of the names under consideration to replace Frank.

Frank’s reputation has soared after guiding Brentford into the Premier League and, against the odds and with the help of their data-driven model, establishing them as a top-flight regular.

The 51-year-old has a proven track record of improving players who he works with and turning them into assets far exceeding the value Brentford paid. He is also known for his tactical versatility.

Levy felt that while Postecoglou had delivered silverware he did not believe the Australian was the right coach to re-establish them as regular Champions League contenders, deciding to call time halfway through a four-year contract.

Scott Munn, Tottenham’s chief football officer, is also expected to leave the club this week in a summer of change following a disastrous 17th-place finish in the Premier League. He was a key Postecoglou ally.
