Football Association doctors will continue to monitor and assess Luke Shaw’s brain after the England and Manchester United defender was involved in a sickening collision at Wembley.
Shaw has been flying for United this season, earning him a call-up by Gareth Southgate and a first England start in three years against Spain on Saturday night. But after setting up England’s opening goal with a wonderful low ball to club teammate Marcus Rashford, Shaw was forced off early in the second half when his head thumped into Spain defender Dani Carvajal.
Play had to be stopped for around 10 minutes and he was treated by 10 medical staff before being carried from the field on a stretcher, in a neck brace and being given oxygen.
Not as bad as feared
For a while it appeared as though Shaw, 23, could well be suffering yet another heavy dose of bad luck, having been ruled out long-term with a horrific leg break when he was in similar form in the season before last.
But Shaw had an X-ray at Wembley and was sat up talking by the end of the night and remained with the England camp on Sunday, where he will continue to be monitored.
On Sunday there were no plans to send Shaw back to his club early, as would’ve been the case had the head injury been more severe, although it would appear unlikely he will be risked against Switzerland on Tuesday in England’s friendly at Leicester City’s King Power Stadium.
Southgate is planning on rotating his squad and Spurs left-back Danny Rose is expected to replace Shaw down that flank.
Shaw tweeted: “Thank you for all the love and support I am doing fine and am in the best hands. I’m a fighter so I will be back soon!”
