Jose Mourinho has hit back at the BT Sport studio after being criticised for his reaction to Marcus Rashford’s early miss in Manchester United‘s win over Young Boys on Tuesday night.
The United manager turned round to his bench, crossed his arms and shook his head after the youngster spurned a chance to put his side ahead in the fifth minute.
“If I saw my manager react like that, I would be absolutely livid,” said host Gary Lineker.

“Turn to the crowd and your own bench and shake your head in disgust at one of your own players, let alone a youngster. You just don’t do that as a coach.”

Rio Ferdinand, the former United defender turned pundit, added: “Rashford’s going to see that after the game. What kind of message of confidence does that send to him?”
Mourinho’s reaction
After the game, Mourinho did not hold back in his disdain for those in the television studio, accusing them of not understanding the pressures managers face.
“I would invite those people to sit on the bench as managers,” Mourinho said. “But I think maybe it’s better to have lots of holidays in Barbados and go to the television screens and touch the electronic dummies. This is much more comfortable than being on the touchline like we managers are.

“I’m pretty sure a proper manager would never criticise another one for emotional reactions on the touchline because it’s déjà vu for them. For the ones that have a nice life, it’s different.”
United won 1-0 thanks to Marouane Fellaini’s late winner, a goal which saw United through to the last 16, and one which caused Mourinho to kick one set of water bottles before picking up another and hurling them to the floor.

“We’ve just scored a goal but we’re talking about Jose Mourinho’s reaction,” Ferdinand added in the studio.
