Chelsea news: Maurizio Sarri explains why he would rather resign ‘immediately’ than be sacked after Europa League final

Maurizio Sarri says he would rather leave Chelsea immediately than be judged on the Europa League final.

The Chelsea manager’s future has been under constant speculation since the turn of the year and reports on Wednesday suggested the London club would not stand in his way if he were to move to Juventus.

And even after Sarri has led the side to a top-four finish in the Premier League and a place in a European final against Arsenal next week, doubts persist over Sarri’s future.

It is a situation which Sarri says “is not right”.

And asked whether his job depends on whether he leaves next Wednesday’s final in Baku with a trophy, he said: “No, if the situation is like this I want to go immediately. You cannot… 10 months of work, and then I have to play everything in 90 minutes? It’s not right. It’s not the right way. You’re either happy about my work or you’re not happy.”

Meeting with Abramovich

Sarri, who has two years left on his contract, is hoping to meet with the Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich after the final to discuss the season and future plans.

The 60-year-old Italian believes he should be judged favourably on a successful season – which he says deserves to be capped with a trophy.

“We got in trouble in January and, when you are in trouble in a difficult Championship like the Premier League, it’s difficult to react,” Sarri said. “But we were able to react. So now our feeling is we deserve to win. We want a trophy for our group, for the team, for the players, for the technical staff, also for the club of course.

“I think that we had a good season, with a lot of problems of course. We lost two or three matches very, very badly. But, at the end, we had a very good season.

“We finished the Premier League in third position. We got to the final of the League Cup, a very difficult competition because we played against Manchester City, Tottenham and Liverpool.

“Now we have the possibility to play the final of the Europa League. So the season is a very good season. If we win, it will become a wonderful season. So I think this group deserve to continue to try to improve more.

“About the meeting, I don’t know the date. If there will be a meeting, even. The situation is clear: I have a contract. In my opinion it would be better to speak about the season, but the situation is clear.”

Bakulash continues

Sarri added his criticism of Uefa’s decision to stage the final in Azerbaijan – which apart from logistical issues for fans, has meant that Arsenal’s Henrikh Mkhitaryan has opted against attending over fears for his safety.

‘sThe Chelsea manager added on Mkhitaryan: “I’m really disappointed for the situation because I’d like to see him on the pitch. I’d like very much to see him on the pitch.

“[But] in this situation, you only have to respect the decision of the man. Not the player, the man.

It [the location] is a big problem for our fans, so I think it would have been better to play it in another location.”

“It would be better to play with 30,000 fans of Chelsea and 30,000 fans of Arsenal. You do this job for this match. For these matches. So it’s better for everybody to have the fans with the team.”
