Ander Herrera departs Manchester United this week with yet another worrying diagnosis concerning the club’s escalating problems and a warning to supporters that they could face years in the wilderness.
New manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has presided over a demoralising end to the campaign that featured one point taken from games against relegated Huddersfield and Cardiff.
Spanish international midfielder Herrera will play no further part in Solskjaer’s attempts to resurrect the club, having opted to leave for a lucrative move to Paris Saint-Germain.
‘The club needs time’
But, while backing Solskjaer and his staff of Kieran McKenna, Michael Carrick, Mike Phelan and Mark Dempsey, Herrera is predicting no quick solution.

“I really believe in Ole,” said Herrera. “I really believe in Michael, Kieran, Mick Phelan in Demps, but I think there is a tough job ahead.
“That is my opinion as a fan and as someone who knows the club at the moment. These fans are the best, they are amazing, but they need time. The club will need time, confidence and support.
“I am sure they will give it but the only think I ask for them is time because this is not easy. There are examples. Liverpool are probably going to win the Champions League but I am leaving this club and they haven’t won one title in five years I have been here.
“They have done incredible work but the fans have given them time. That’s what this club needs at the moment.”
‘Ole is the right person’
Mention of Liverpool is a sobering comparison for United supporters, just days after Jurgen Klopp’s club made it 30 years without a league title.
However, at least Herrera is convinced that in their new Norwegian manager, United have a man who will ensure the club does not suffer a similar three decades of failure.
“I am convinced it’s not going to be because the right person is at the wheel,” he said. “He’s the right person so I am convinced it’s not going to take 30 years that’s for sure.”
